What is WORD?
WORD has two bookstores: one in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that opened in March of 2007, and one in Jersey City, which opened in December 2013. Our primary goal is to be whatever our communities need us to be!
In Brooklyn, that means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet, but we read too much, so it all works out.
In Jersey City, we're still figuring it out! We're delighted to welcome everyone to our bookstore and café, and will be putting on events for everyone from the littlest of kids to nonfiction fans to genre lovers and beyond. We'll also have stationery, toys and games, and lots of delicious treats!
Why Greenpoint and Jersey City?
Because they are amazing neighborhoods.

How do I get to WORD?
Brooklyn: Located at 126 Franklin Street, we're closest to the Greenpoint Ave stop on the G. From the corner of Greenpoint and Manhattan, walk towards Milton Street (in the direction of the really big church). Make a right on Milton. After one block, you'll be at the corner of Milton and Franklin, and right next to us.
You can also walk to WORD from the L, if the weather is cooperative. From the Bedford Ave stop, walk up Bedford towards North 8th. You'll walk by McCarren Park. When Bedford runs into Manhattan Ave, make a left. Try to avoid being distracted by Peter Pan Donuts (on the lefthand side of the street between Norman and Meserole). At Milton, make a left, and we'll see you in one block.
Jersey City: Located at 123 Newark Avenue, we're just across the street from the Grove Street PATH station. Newark dead-ends at Grove, so all you have to do is walk up Newark; we're the second big building on the left.
Will WORD carry my book/have an event for my book?
Maybe. Email the stores respectively at brooklyn at wordbookstoresdotcom or jerseycity at wordbookstores.com and tell us why you think it's a good fit.
How does WORD feel about surprises?
Good, as long as they are food, drink, or flowers.
How does WORD feel about ebooks?
We are big supporters of people reading and do not particularly care how they go about it. Whatever floats your boat! We like ebooks best when you buy them from us (see the Kobo ebooks link in our Browse section), though we are also into people getting them from the library. If any publishers are reading this, we implore them to get rid of DRM on their ebooks and spend more time proofreading them.
What if I want a book and WORD doesn't have it in stock?
That's okay. We order books all the time and can usually have what you want in 1-2 days. In fact, you don't even have to leave your house to see if we have a book in stock. Just search for it using the search tool in the upper right hand corner. You'll be able to see if it's currently in stock and if so, how many are here. Then, whether it's in stock or not, you can buy it but select "pick up in store," so there's no shipping charge, and you still get to see our smiling faces. So easy!
Is there somewhere I can get a drink or dinner while I'm nearby?
For a Brooklyn starter list, we recommend: Peter Pan Donuts (the best donuts in NYC). The Diamond (best beer selection). Lomzynianka (when in Little Poland). The Pencil Factory (just a block away). Lulu's (free personal pizza with every beer). The Habitat (mac n' cheese happy hour). Amarin Cafe (good Thai food). Papacitos (good Mexican). Pretty much everywhere has a few good vegetarian options.
For a Jersey City starter list, we recommend: the Roman Nose (family-recipe Italian! Do not skip the sour cream cookies). LITM (if you're looking for a bar with an artistic flair.) Skinner's Loft (both for their bar and their rooftop dining). Barcade (beer and video games!). Port-o (delicious tapas and a beautiful outdoor space). Two Boots (pizza pizza pizza! And now wine and beer). The Little Sandwich Shop (at which you are likely to run into one of our staff on any given day).
Is it totally awesome to work in a bookstore because you get to sit and read all day?
It is totally awesome to work in a bookstore, yes, but you absolutely do not get to sit and read all day.
Can I use a credit card at WORD?
Yes, but we will love you 2-5% more if you use cash.
What's the deal with refunds?
All books in good condition can be exchanged within seven days with a receipt.
When will my books arrive?
If you buy them in the store, they will arrive in your hands immediately.
If you buy them online, that depends on how you ship them. We try to process all online orders as soon as possible and do so at least every 24 hours. Books that are in the store at the time of your order go out immediately. Most other books ship within 2-4 days of your order, unless they are not in stock at our warehouse. You should get an email from us when we process your order letting you know exactly what the deal is with your particular books. UPS and FedEx orders tend to arrive 1-3 days after the ship; priority mail in 2-4 days. Media mail can take up to a month but usually only takes a week or so.
Why should I visit WORD?
Because books are the repository of all that is good in this world, and we love them, and we love you.
