The Weekly WORD, Brooklyn

  • On Tuesday, September 30th, at 7 p.m., we’ll pack our books and head over to Housing Works (126 Crosby St) for a celebration of The Rise of Aurora West. The Eisner award-winning cartoonist and his co-author JT Petty will be in conversation with art critic Jillian Steinhauer of Hyperallergic. The lines have been drawn, people — and they look awesome.
  • Wednesday, October 1st, at 7 p.m., we’ll welcome the return of Nicholas Kaufmann, who will be presenting Die and Stay Dead, the sequel to last year’s Dying is My Business. He’ll be joined by Laird Barron (Occultation, The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All) and L.A. Kornetsky (Doghouse), other purveyors of the deadly, weird, and wonderful. Two of those adjectives might be applied to our basement, in general. We won’t tell you which two. Nope.
  • On Thursday, October 2nd, at 7 p.m., we’ll stumble through the boozier side of Hollywood history with drinks, trivia, a giveaway, and the creators of Of All the Gin Joints, author Mark Bailey and artist Edward Hemingway. Moderation will be provided by Karen Duffy — oh, and speaking of moderation, whiskey, glorious whiskey will be provided by High West Distillery. Witty anecdotes and trivia genius, however, will be provided by you. No pressure, no pressure.
  • On Saturday, October 4th, we’ll host meetings from two different book groups. At noon, WORD Book Group will meet to discuss The Good Lord Bird by James McBride. Then, at 2:45 p.m., Romance Book Group will talk Dark Lover by J.R. Ward. Want to hop in on the conversation? You can and should! Pick up your group’s pick today and get it for 10% off.

Read on, sweet Brooklyn. Hey, want to receive text reminders about these events? Right this way, beautiful people. Also, did you know that sometimes we sell books in celebration of cookies and cakes? Okay, we don’t do this all the time, but check it out: neighborhood buddies and providers of all the baked goods Ovenly have released a cookbook! Get it at their launch party on October 2nd…from us! Yes, yes.
